She was built in 1958/59 by Monte Jones aged 16 years together with Don Stewart and Keithe Brown both aged 15 years using Meranti quiarter inch three ply over Kaihikatea frames and stringers. She was originally powered by a 1947 3 HP Scott Attwater outboard (still used as the auxiliary today), then an 18HP Evinrude follwed by ba 40HP Evinrude. The boys made almost all the fittings as well as the boat. At the 1963 Auckland Boat Show she was awarded second place in the Amateur Built boat class.
