"Little
Heron" 1919
Kauri Launch owned by Mark Farrant was launched onto Lake Rotoiti on the 13th
September 2008. She is a dd kauri launch built by Coulthard Bros on the Manukau
for a Mr Claude Billings, a farmer from Waitakaruru. Originally, she was built
as a launch but was converted to sail by her second owner and spent most of her
life in this configuration. Sixteen years of that as a commercial fishing boat
out of Whangamata.
The sailing gear and rig were removed in 2000 and she has been a launch ever
since.
She was found on Trademe, having been restored after she
had taken on some water while
at her mooring in little Shoal Bay when the
automatic bilge pump went off for a time, requiring some reconditioning to her
inboard diesel engine.
She has tiller steering, a 45hp Perkins diesel and weighs in at 3.1 tons.
She performs very well in rough water thanks to still carrying the ballast from
her yachting days.
